Stomach Acid is VITAL for Digestion & More.
Stomach acid or hydrochloric acid (HCL) is one of the most important fluids found in your body and is needed for many different processes in digestive health and more.
What is Hydrochloric Acid? HCL is a strong, low-pH acid that is produced by the gastric cells in the stomach. HCL is needed to break down food for optimal nutrient absorption. It also aids in killing microbes and pathogenic bacteria, protecting us from infections.
When food is properly broken down, from adequate HCL, our bodies can absorb its nutrients and get rid of waste. Low levels of HCL can lead to gastrointestinal issues including bloating, poor nutrient absorption and heartburn. Poor HCL production also can lead to mineral deficiencies, autoimmune reactions and skin problems like acne and rosacea.
A deficiency in HCL is known as Hypochlorhydria.
Symptoms of low stomach acid are related to impaired digestion, increased susceptibility to infection, and reduced absorption of nutrients from food.
Symptoms of low HCL:
Bloating, distension
Burping
Upset stomach, nausea
Abdominal pain
Heartburn
Constipation/Diarrhea,
Feeling full after only eating a small amount
Undigested food in stool
Hair loss
Weak brittle nails
GI Infections
Deficiencies of minerals (zinc, B12, magnesium, iron) and vitamin B12
Causes of low HCL:
Age
Alcohol
Processed foods
Smoking
Stress
Medications. Taking antacids or medications prescribed to treat ulcers and acid reflux, such as PPIs, for a long period of time may also lead to hypochlorhydria.
Vitamin Deficiency
H. Pylori infection. Infection with H. Pylori is a common cause of gastric ulcers. If left untreated, it can result in decreased stomach acid.
How to increase HCL production:
Mindfully eat
Chew thoroughly
Eat fermented foods
Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables
Consider HCl supplementation
Avoid unnecessary antacid use
Address Zinc deficiency
Exercise & manage stress
First thing in the morning - Drink 1/2 t. - 2 T. raw apple cider vinegar (it must be raw) in 1/2 cup warm water to stimulate HCL and bile production
Bitters: Digestive bitters stimulate HCL secretion, pancreatic enzyme and bile production. Take 15-20 minutes prior to meals with a glass of water
