Seasonal Living: Spring Bloom

Spring is the season of freshness and renewal! Flowers are starting to bloom, our daylight is getting longer, the weather is getting warmer, and spring cleaning is on our minds.

It’s about clearing out the clutter–both physically and mentally. For our health, the spring season reminds us of the beauty and power of detoxing the body. After a long and stagnant winter, our bodies crave the cleanse that comes with prioritizing spring produce, more movement, sweating, and spending more time in sunlight.

Recap of Seasonal Living

In previous posts, I wrote about seasonal living and embracing autumn and winter in your life. To recap seasonal living: it is a way of living in rhythm with nature and its seasons by eating seasonal produce, participating in seasonal holidays, and looking deeper into what the lessons of each season can teach you or remind you about yourself. Instead of fighting the seasons as they come and go, it’s about finding ways to welcome them.

Spring Intentions

Seasons serve as great reminders that life moves in cycles. Spring is known as “the season of hope” because of its emphasis on renewal after the challenges winter can bring. Following the cold seasons and their opportunities for us to slow down and make “behind the scenes” plans, spring is about taking action. The dreaming and planning you did in winter is the foundation of what you will follow through on in spring!

With warmer weather and longer days ahead, it makes us feel more optimistic in our day-to-day lives. Use that energy and dive into new interests, health goals, rituals or routines, new recipes, and expand your mindset. Use spring as the opportunity to click the reset button! It’s always the perfect time to prioritize your health, your passions, and your goals. Stay present and joyful for spring’s natural beauty and its reminder that even nature begins again every year.

Ways to Welcome Spring

Get outside

  • More time outside will boost your vitamin D and your mood. Getting sunlight first thing in the morning will help your circadian rhythm (your body’s 24-hour cycle).

Grounding/Earthing

  • Earthing/grounding is where you place your bare feet on the surface of the earth. Since we are positively charged and the surface is negative, we are able to find equilibrium or balance. Check out my previous blog post on earthing and grounding to learn all the benefits!

Refreshing Your Home and Mind

  • Spring cleaning is more than just dusting in hard-to-reach places that you put off for the majority of the year, it’s about creating space for new energy. Donating clothing or household items not only helps declutter your space, but it also helps declutter the mind.

  • Invite the freshness of spring inside your home by opening up the windows and adding some fresh flowers and greenery!

Revive or add to your morning or evening routine

  • Not loving your routine or wanting to start one? With the changes of each season, it offers the perfect time to dive into some resets. Match the fresh energy of spring by adding in clean skincare products, lymphatic drainage massages through gua sha or dry brushing to help detox, reducing screen time in the morning/evening, a consistent workout schedule, and _______. You fill in the blank! Adopt a wellness ritual or habit that aligns most with you

Get sweating!

  • Sweating is our body's natural way of detoxing. Winter months can mean more time indoors, and therefore less sweating. Get outside as the weather warms up and choose to do more exercises outdoors.

Detoxification

  • Drink herbal teas that support digestion and detoxification, such as dandelion root or nettle tea. Show your liver some love with routine castor oil packs, limiting alcohol, swapping out toxic cleaning products or air fresheners, and cutting down on processed foods.

Detoxification

Our liver is our body’s main filtration system. It converts toxins into waste products, cleanses our blood, and metabolizes nutrients to support the body. Our liver health is vital to detoxification and serves as the foundation of our body’s overall regulation.

How to Support the Liver

Maintain a healthy diet

  • Prioritize whole foods! Foods high in antioxidants have been known to support liver function such as berries, fatty fish, avocado, leafy greens, olive oil, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts.

Limit alcohol consumption

  • Excessive alcohol can damage liver cells and lead to chronic disease.

Removing toxins

  • Although some environmental toxin exposure can be uncontrollable, we are able to limit our exposure. Conventional and common cleaning products, air fresheners, and fragrances in perfumes all contain toxic chemicals that cause stress on the liver

Spring Produce

Que the farmer’s markets back in session! The benefits of seasonal eating (eating specific foods that are grown during specific seasons) include richer flavors, and more nutrients, it supports a healthier planet, and seasonal produce have beneficial nutrients that are tailored for each season
