Unlike sweet cherries, tart cherries are small and bright in color. They get their color from a flavonoid called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins work as an antioxidant that improves immune function and helps protect the body from chronic diseases.
Typically, they are enjoyed frozen or dried, but they make a very healthy juice!
They offer a wide variety of benefits including reducing inflammation, lowering blood pressure, muscle recovery support and reducing LDL “bad” cholesterol. However, one of the bigger benefits is how tart cherries aid in sleep.
Sleep Aid:
Tart cherries contain melatonin, which is a hormone that helps regulate your sleep cycle. Oftentimes melatonin is used to help with insomnia.
In addition to melatonin, tart cherries also contain magnesium. Magnesium is an essential mineral that also aids in sleep. Tart cherries have around 30 milligrams of magnesium per serving.
One study showed that participants who drank the tart cherry juice had increased sleep quality, longer time in bed and longer sleep time.
