The Power of Elderberries
The European Black Elderberry (sambucus nigra)
The therapeutic properties of elderberries can be correlated with their strong antioxidant activity. Numerous studies have demonstrated the elderberry's antioxidant capacity and antibacterial, antiviral, antidiabetic, and anticancer properties. Chronic inflammation is at the root of many diseases. Antioxidants work by reducing oxidative stress or inflammation in the body, therefore helping to combat diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, autoimmune conditions, and more.
The Power of Elderberries:
Abundance of wellness through supporting a healthy immune system, decreasing vulnerability to becoming sick, and acting as a powerful antioxidant to reduce disease.
Ease of movement through the support of a healthy inflammatory response in the body.
Restored energy through the support of healthy blood circulation that affects major systems in the body.
Therapeutic Properties of Elderberries
Anthocyanins // Protect against inflammation
Anthocyanins are a class of flavonoids in plants that not only give plants their color but also provide many benefits associated with the prevention of diseases driven by oxidative stress (inflammation), such as cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, and neurodegenerative diseases. Berries such as strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, and raspberries are a rich source of anthocyanins, but the highest content is found in elderberries.
In a 12-week study of 169 people with high cholesterol, supplementing with 320 mg of anthocyanins twice per day significantly reduced markers of inflammation. In a 4-week study, people who took 320 mg of anthocyanins daily had significantly lower blood markers of inflammation. One study suggests that these compounds may help reduce inflammation and pain in people with inflammatory arthritis.
Vitamin C
Elderberries are a rich source of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant in the body. It helps fight inflammatory conditions, supports your immune system, and aids in detoxification.
Quercetin
Elderberries provide a natural source of quercetin. Quercetin reduces oxidative stress on the body and has been studied to improve inflammatory conditions such as heart disease, allergies, infections, chronic fatigue, arthritis, and viral infections. Quercetin is well known for reducing the release of histamine, which is the driving immune cell that is responsible for allergies.
